Blackheads and whiteheads are pores that fill up with oil and dead skin cells.  A blackhead is an open pore while a whitehead is a closed pore. Papules feel hard.  When many appear, they feel like sandpaper. Acne cysts form when pores fill up with dead skin cells, oil and bacteria.  A cyst goes deeper into the skin and can be painful. Nodules are large, hard bumps under the surface of the skin.  Nodules leave scars, even after healing. Acne causes other problems as well.  People with acne often have low self esteem and depression.  Untreated, acne can leave dark spots on the skin and permanent scarring.  There are many types of treatment options available.
